This website has features that are best viewed on the open-source browser Firefox or Google Chrome. There should be no issues on other browsers, but they may place certain limitations on the map’s graphical overlays. If the site is too wide for your screen, we recommend screen resolutions of 1280x1024 or higher. Alternatively you may simply want to zoom out in your browser by pressing the Ctrl and - buttons simultaneously, or Ctrl and scroll down with a scroll wheel mouse.
The main functionality of the page is accessed through the “My Next Community” tab. If you’re looking to purchase a home in Calgary, simply click any of the criteria listed and specify your preferences. The criteria window can be minimized by clicking either "Done" or another criterium. There is an option to place different weights based on what’s most important to you (hint: if you’re interested in renting rather than buying in Calgary, simply choose a weight of 1 for “Budget” and let the other factors determine your results.) When you're done entering your search inputs,
click "Find My Next Community" to begin the search.
The map is completely navigable. Pan by clicking and dragging the map, or with the buttons in the upper-left corner of the map. Zoom using a scroll wheel mouse while the mouse is within the map's bounds, with the zoom bar on the left side of the map, or by double-clicking a point on the map. After performing a search, flags will signify the addresses you entered (click the flags to confirm their addresses.) Numbered icons signify the ordered results of your search.
Click them to display the community name, result score and a central location for use in your car's GPS or a web-based directions provider.
A large portion of the data presented and used in computations are from Statistics Canada’s 2006 census. Average home values have been adjusted with respect to current Calgary Real Estate Board average sales prices in order to estimate current average prices. Although budget is no doubt a major constraint for any buyer, due to the constant changes in the real estate market and variances in prices in any given neighbourhood, this factor is weighed down accordingly. Proximity to locations is computed based on the location of your entered addresses as “geocoded” by Google to a central point in every neighbourhood. Convenience of public transit is based on percentage of people in a neighbourhood who commute via LRT or public bus. Prevalence of high-rise buildings in a neighbourhood is derived from the number of apartments in buildings over 5 stories in height.
Your privacy is very important to us, and furthermore, the site’s functionality does not require any user’s private data. Therefore none of your selections or inputs will be stored at any time, for any reason. Please note that your inputs may be stored on your own computer; if you’d like to reset them to the default settings, simply press Ctrl-F5. If you’d like to clear any history of your inputs, consult your internet browser’s documentation on clearing or deleting browsing history but first be aware of any stored data that you may need.

We are a not-for-profit group who built this website as an ENGO 500 project at the University of Calgary.
In September 2009 none of our 4 group members had any experience whatsoever with web programming.
The course ended in April 2010. In those 9 months we gained significant experience and confidence in website development.
We hope you enjoy the website and we are aware that there is room for improvement, so please help yourself! This is open source after all.
